Bev Thoms, Fiber Artist

Bev Thoms has lived with her husband and four children on their family sheep farm in the Agricultural Reserve of Montgomery County since 1974.  It has been quite a journey from a medical professional to countryside fiber artist. Work on their farm over the years began with a large peach and apple orchard, and later included foaling brood mares and halter breaking the foals for a harness racing syndicate. The operation eventually transitioned to raising a large flock of meat sheep (attacked and killed by a neighbor dog), and finally, a flock of fiber sheep. The exquisitely beautiful fiber harvested from this flock led her into spinning yarn, weaving clothing and blankets, and ultimately to her passion- felt making. Where she creates unique felted art for body and home.

Her designs include fashions vests, scarves, accessories and wraps, table wear, wall art, blankets and lap blankets. She employs the ancient art of felting and specialized dyeing techniques, often combining up-recycled silk and viscose fiber into many of her pieces. Bev’s felting studio and dye kitchen resides in their big red barn, and is surrounded by rolling pastures and gardens, with her beloved sheep close by. The stunning nature of the surrounding rural landscape never fails to inspire Bev’s fiber work. She welcomes visitors by appointment.
